American unveils first of new Boeing 737s

April 13, 2009

American Airlines on Monday took delivery of two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, planes that will be used to replace American’s MD-80 fleet.

The two jets are the first new 737-800s that American has received since December 2001. Through the first quarter of 2011, American expects to take delivery of 76 new 737s.

CEO Gerard Arpey said American has secured financing commitments to cover the majority of its expected 737 deliveries.

The new 160-passenger planes have larger overhead storage bins that allow roll-aboards to be loaded wheels first, American said.

The planes have 110-volt AC power available to all passengers, enabling travelers to plug in laptops and other portable electronic equipment. There is one power port per seat in first class and two ports per three seats in coach.

Over time, American plans to equip the 737s with in-flight Internet service.

The 737s will burn 35% less fuel than MD-80s on a seat-mile basis, American added.
