BAH-SandalsEmeraldBayRoomSandals Emerald Bay, Great Exuma, Bahamas officially opened its doors today, following a soft opening for tour operators and travel agents.

The 500-acre property is the 14th Sandals resort in the Caribbean.

Sandals purchased the former Four Seasons Resort last August and pumped more than $14 million into enhancements and upgrades.

The resort offers butler service for all 183 suites; a 17-acre, deepwater marina that can accommodate yachts up to 240 feet long; a Greg Norman-designed golf course; a half-acre, zero-entry pool with Jacuzzi, swim-up bar and fire-pit seating area in the center; five a la carte restaurants; a croquet court; beach and pool cabanas; a dive program; a fleet of bicycles for guests’ use; and a Red Lane Spa with 17 treatment rooms.

Sandals is offering promotions in conjunction with the opening, including complimentary companion airfare for a minimum four-night stay for travel to Dec. 22, and 65% off rack rates for a seven-night stay booked by Feb. 18.

I was fortunate to be one of the invited travel agents to the 'sneak preview' of Emerald Bay. In a word...amazing. The resort is not a typical Sandals...no buffets, no rah, rah...just upscale service and quality amenities...although the Drunken Duck Pub is quite lively at night. The food is very good and the beach is incredible...like powdered sugar and lots of it. The water, what they call Exuma Blue, is great. The golf course is very challenging and golfers should enjoy it a lot. The Golf Channel is there now filming now for a show that will run in June. Yes, there are still some things to be ironed out, just like all new hotels, but each day there were changes as they finished the resort. Be careful, though, as this resort is not for everyone. If your clients are looking for rah, rah like the others, this is not the place. This is upscale, but with a Sandals touch.
