Hub a better home for Mumbai service, says Delta

August 07, 2008

Delta will launch daily, nonstop service between Atlanta and Mumbai on Nov. 1, and will cease New York flights to and from the Indian city on that day.

The airline said the size and scope of its Atlanta hub makes that airport best suited for the capacity of the Boeing 777-200LR used on the route, in terms of cargo and passenger lift.

“Serving Mumbai from Atlanta will allow us to optimize the route, thanks to the approximately 150 U.S. destinations to which Mumbai customers will be able to connect, as well as the more than 30 easy connections available to and from Latin America and the Caribbean,'' said '' said Glen Hauenstein, Delta’s executive vice president, network and revenue management.

Delta has been using the Boeing 777 long-range aircraft on the New York flight to Mumbai since April.
