Phase 1 of a $20 million renovation of Ayers Rock Resort in Australia is underway with a refurbishment of the guestrooms and public areas of the five-star Sails in the Desert Hotel. The redo, the property’s first since its opening in 1982, is a joint venture of Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia and the Indigenous Land Corp.

All rooms will feature new furniture, curtains, linens, LCD TVs and artwork commissioned by local aboriginal artists. The hotel is open during the renovation, and a two-night spa getaway is priced at $379 a night through April, a 30% discount on regular rates. The Sails in the Desert renovation is scheduled for completion in May and will be followed by work on the resort’s other four hotels: Desert Gardens, Outback Pioneer, Lost Camel and Emu Walk Apartments.
