A $16 passenger facilities charge (PFC) took effect Jan. 1 for all international visitors departing the Cayman Islands.
The new fee, in addition to the existing $25 departure tax for anyone ages 12 years and up, has been added to the cost of an airline ticket and applies to passengers departing Owen Roberts Airport, the General Aviation Terminal on Grand Cayman and the Gerrard Smith Airport on Cayman Brac.
The PFC, which does not apply to domestic travel between Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, will be remitted to the Cayman Islands Airport Authority.
A portion of the proceeds will be earmarked for the construction of a new airport on Little Cayman as well as renovation projects at both Owen Roberts Airport and Gerrard Smith Airport.
