Skydive operation opens in Jamaica

By Gay Nagle Myers

Skydive Jamaica, a new attraction in Jamaica, specializes in tandem skydives.

Typically, divers jump out of an airplane at more than 12,500 feet. They freefall for a while at speeds of up to 150 mph before the instructor pulls the cord to release the parachute. The diver and instructor then glide safely to a landing.

The entire dive can be videoed.

Owner and operator Keith George said the facility is licensed by the Jamaican Civil Aviation Authority.

"Participants can experience the Jamaican scenery in an unprecedented way, from more than two miles up, safely secured to a licensed professional who guides them through the entire skydive process," George said.

Skydive instructors have logged more than 4,000 dives each, according to George.

Skydive Jamaica’s operating aircraft is a 14-passenger King Air 90.

Tandem dives are priced at $250 per person; the DVD and digital pictures cost an additional $125.

Skydive Jamaica is open daily from 8 a.m. until sunset.
