Plans for the cleanup of Coki Point Beach in St. Thomas include the shutdown of vendor operations for 10 days while work is being done.
The beach cleanup is one of several measures enacted after the death by stray bullet of a teenage cruise passenger on the roadway leading to the beach on July 12.
Work will begin Aug. 2 and will include repairing the fence surrounding the beach, landscaping, debris removal at the site and along the roadside, addition of trash removal bins and restroom reconstruction, according to the St. Thomas Source website.
Gov. John deJongh Jr. will ask for legislation prohibiting barkers on public roadways and beaches.
The governor also ordered an inquiry into police performance at the time of the shootout and response following the incident.
Police Commissioner Novelle Francis Jr. said the department has supplemented its tourist safety plan with enhanced patrols, targeted camera surveillance and the deployment of a special operations team to handle security needs for specific locales.
