Women arrested for robbing hotel guest were invited to the room

November 11, 2009

Two of the suspects charged with robbing a New York lawyer in his hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton San Juan were women invited to his room.

Puerto Rico authorities have charged five suspects in connection with the robbery of New York lawyer Robert Anello. Police initially had six under arrest, but charges were dropped against a 17-year-old girl in the room at the time, according to published reports.

According to Capt. Samuel Luciano, the women called three men who helped carry out the robbery.

Anello allegedly was bound with lamp cords, robbed of $800 in cash from the room safe and threatened until he gave up the password for his debit card. His two cell phones and four credit cards also were taken.

All five suspects are charged with robbery and unlawful imprisonment and remain in jail after not posting bail totaling $122,000.

A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 30.

LESSON LEARNED: Do not invite strangers to your hotel room! I've escorted many groups and have been invited back to guest's room for nightcap or to continue the conversation. As harmless as some of these people may have been, I've always turned them down. People are crazy these days! It's your word against theirs. Who knows what you would get accused of?

Real good tabloid reporting. First, what difference does it make that the victim was a "New York Lawyer"? Oh yeah, so small minded losers can make their lawyer jokes. Second, the whole point of the original story was that someone was robbed in their hotel room in San Juan. I can see the authorities there trying to downplay the crime by making it a cautionary tale. Be careful who you invite up, you never know. Let's see, how do we get that to be the message? The easiest way to do that is to say the victim invited them up (wink, wink)and let innuendo do the rest. Good job Gay, you really came through for the locals. Trash the victim and let the small minded gossip about it. Did you get a free suite in San Jaun for this stellar piece of "journalism"?

No one (regardless of their initial intent) deserves to be assaulted and robbed. It is sad to think that we are still producing societies with groups of people who are compelled to prey on each other.

The lawyer got what he thought he was going to do to the women. This is a case of who was the stuckee and who was the stucker or maybe do unto others before they do unto you.
