CLIA said it looks forward to reviewing a proposal advanced by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) that would create a cruise passenger bill of rights.
The concept was announced by Schumer in the wake of the Carnival Triumph engine-room fire and malfunctions on other Carnival ships that received publicity.
Among other things, it would guarantee the right to leave a docked ship if adequate provisions cannot be provided onboard and the right to backup power in case of a generator failure.
In a statement, CLIA said cruise ships adhere to strict international and national regulations, but the industry continuously strives to improve on its practices.
"In this spirit of continuous improvement, we appreciate the opportunity to review Sen. Schumer's proposal," CLIA said.
