Carnival Cruise Lines has suspended until further notice a scuba excursion in Grand Turk after a 17-year-old passenger aboard the Carnival Pride lost consciousness and later died after participating in the excursion.

He was airlifted to a medical facility in South Florida, where he died on April 8, Carnival said. The teenager had taken the underwater diving class on April 4.

“Carnival's CareTeam provided full support and assistance to the family, and the cruise line extends its deepest sympathy to the guest's family and loved ones during this very tragic and difficult time,” Carnival said in a statement.

The 2,124-passenger ship operates seven-day Florida and Bahamas cruises from Baltimore. Grand Turk, in the Turks and Caicos islands, is a port call on the itinerary
