Carnival Cruise Lines, citing the continued high cost of transatlantic flights, said it will not have a ship sailing in Europe in 2014.
Carnival said it depends heavily on U.S. passengers to fill its ships in Europe, although it does source some guests from other countries.
"We anticipate that airfares to Europe will remain high, and we believe our North American passengers will continue to prefer more affordable vacations options closer to home as we move into next year," a Carnival statement said.
"Therefore we have decided to keep ships in North America during this period rather than place capacity in Europe in 2014."
Carnival said earlier this week it would redeploy Carnival Legend to Australia beginning in September to operate seasonal sailings. Its itineraries for the summer of 2014 will be in the Northern Hemisphere but are otherwise undetermined.
Legend is scheduled to do Mediterranean and Baltic cruises from the U.K and Spain this summer.
Carnival Sunshine is also doing Mediterranean cruises this summer before heading to New Orleans in November.
