NCL bans stateroom smoking

Norwegian Cruise Line no longer will allow passengers to smoke cigarettes in their staterooms, effective in January.

Guests who are in a balcony stateroom can smoke cigarettes on the balcony, but cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited.

Additionally, in an effort to diminish cigarette smoke indoors, smoking will be permitted only in the casino. Smoking will be prohibited in all other public indoor venues, including all bars, restaurants, conference rooms, corridors, restrooms, staircases and landings.

Guests can utilize the enclosed cigar bars on board the Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Spirit for cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking.

The new policy allows guests to smoke cigarettes, cigars and pipes in outdoor public spaces and open decks, where designated. But smoking will not be permitted near outdoor venues that serve food, and outdoor spaces such as the jogging track, sport complex, children’s pool and the Haven.

Norwegian’s policy change follows new smoking rules being implemented by a few other lines. Starting Dec. 1, Carnival passengers won’t be allowed to smoke in their staterooms, but can smoke on their balconies. Princess won't allow smoking in staterooms or on balconies, starting Jan. 15.
