New modem for Breakaway expected to deliver faster Internet

By Tom Stieghorst
MTN Communications said it has installed a new satellite modem on Norwegian Breakaway that will allow for faster Internet speeds.

Norwegian has completed a six-month test with the iDirect X7 modem and has "dramatically improved the efficiency and throughput of the vessel’s communications system,” MTN said.

The modem enables speeds of up to 100 megabits per second and delivers “unprecedented availability” through advanced adapted modulation techniques, the company said.

MTN said that the pilot program on Breakaway paves the way to start deploying the X7 modem on many vessels.

“The X7 is the most advanced satellite modem we have ever developed,” said Dave Bettinger, chief technology officer at iDirect. “We were very excited to put it to the ultimate test — on a cruise ship with upwards of 6,000 passengers and crew, with thousands of mobile devices."
