Norwegian Cruise Line newbuilds to have scrubbers

By Tom Stieghorst
Norwegian Cruise Line said its two "Breakaway Plus" ships to be delivered starting in 2015 will have exhaust scrubbers that enable it to meet tougher pollution rules without having to use more expensive low-sulfur fuels.

The scrubbers will be purchased from Green Tech Marine, which will provide five of the units for each ship.

Green Tech Marine also delivered scrubbers for Norwegian’s Pride of America, which sails year-round in Hawaii. The scrubbers were installed during the ship’s drydock refurbishment in March and are scheduled to be fully operational later this year.
