Royal Caribbean said it will offer valid weddings at sea for the first time after a new law enabling the change was enacted in the Bahamas.
Previously, couples seeking to be married could go through a ceremonial wedding that would not be legally recognized. The procedure would have to be repeated in port or in another land venue to be binding.
Under the newly passed Marriage Act, the Bahamas allows for marriages in international waters outside the 12-mile territorial limits of any nation.
Several Royal Caribbean ships are flagged in the Bahamas.
Royal Caribbean has a Romance at Sea package that includes the wedding ceremony, flowers, cake, music and other amenities. It is complimentary when the wedding party books 12 or more staterooms on a cruise of five days or longer.
