American Cruise Lines' fifth small ship, the 104-passenger Independence, debuted in summer 2010.

Built at the company's Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland, the Independence is part of ACL's fleet of six U.S.-flagged ships that operate along the East and West Coasts. The Independence's two close sister-ships, the American Star and American Spirit, both carry 100 passengers. American Glory takes 49, and Queen of the Mississippi takes 150.
