Barbados resort targets U.S. agents By Cathy Carroll / December 18, 1998 Share 1 -- ST. JAMES -- Royal Westmoreland, a 480-acre luxury resort and residential golf and country club community on the west coast of Barbados, is targeting U.S. agents. Currently, 32 villas are available for agent bookings, according to management here, which is positioning the property as an alternative to the posh Sandy Lane, which closed last spring for a redesign through September 1999. Booking demand has increased at the property since Sandy Lane's close, a spokeswoman for Royal Westmoreland said. The property's 280 residences, set on rolling hills overlooking the golf courses and the Caribbean Sea, has traditionally been a retreat for the U.K.'s well-heeled visitors. The resort claims that more than 90 residences have been purchased by luminaries such as former Wimbledon tennis champion Virginia Wade. The facilities here include: an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course; a driving range, a putting green and pitching green; a golf academy; the Sanctuary Health Spa; two Har Tru floodlight tennis courts; a croquet lawn; a clubhouse with restaurant; a professional shop; three bars; the Pelican Children's Club; four outdoor swimming pools, including two for children, and a Jacuzzi.Villas include two-bedroom units with views of the ocean or the golf courses' fairways and include the services of housekeepers. Courtyard villas with three double bedrooms have private swimming pools, a housekeeper and a cook.In November, the resort began construction of 50 more villas, which are priced to sell for $700,000 each and are expected to be completed in two years.Transportation is available to and from Grantley Adams Airport by the property's fleet of Mitsubishi Pajeros or by helicopter. All guests are met by the resort's hospitality service in the airport baggage area. The Beach facilities of the Glitter Bay and the Royal Pavilion hotels are available to residents of Royal Westmoreland. At each of these properties, guests can use the water sports facilities. The facility's concierges are available to book tours, dining arrangements or other activities on the island.Royal Westmoreland Phone: (246) 422-4653 Fax: (246) 422-3021FACT SHEET: Four golf coursesHere are some statistics on the Royal Westmoreland golf courses:Gold.
