Construction on Key Biscayne property is under way September 03, 1998 Share 1 -- KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Construction is under way on the Grand Bay Resort Condominium Hotel, which will occupy a 1,200-foot beachfront site when it opens here in December1999. The 14-story property will have 243 luxury hotel rooms and 226 condo suites. In addition, there will be more than 20,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 7,500-square-foot grand ballroom that seats up to 500.Other facilities will include a 20,000-square-foot European-style health spa that offers fitness equipment, health treatments and personal training. In addition, there will be a tennis center with 11 lighted hydro-clay courts, including a stadium court and one hard surface court; a tennis pro shop, and two heated pools.For dining, a gourmet food and beverage market will be on site as well as an indoor-outdoor restaurant (with 324 seats), a formal restaurant (that seats up to 84) and a lounge (that seats up to 160). There will be a lobby bar and pool bar, as well.A concierge staff, baby-sitting service and 24-hour room service will be available.The developer is a partnership led by Sherwood Weiser and Donald Lefton, principals of Carnival Hotels & Resorts. Other principals are Douglas Weiser, Carnival Hotels' senior vice president for development, and Karim Alibhai, president of Patriot American Hospitality Operating Co., based in Dallas.
