Georgia's Athens shifts group marketing By Tara Rosa / June 08, 2001 Share 1 -- ATHENS, Ga. -- The Athens (Ga.) Convention & Visitors Bureau revamped its group tour marketing plan. According to a spokeswoman, in the last six months, "[Athens] has made a real push to package our attractions and proactively market to tour operators.""In fact," she said, "we have already sold more [group business] to date than in all of the year 2000."The first move was to publish its first Group Tour Planners Guide.The guide highlights sample itineraries of three-day tours with themes ranging from heritage to gardens to fine arts.The Athens CVB also customizes tours for groups.Some of the attractions in the surrounding Athens area that are included in tour descriptions are the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, the U.S. Naval Corps Museum, the Taylor-Grady House and Arnocroft House, the Georgia Museum of Art and the Morton Theater."We've also included other attractions categorized by niche for groups to extend their stay or build a customized tour," said the spokeswoman.Athens is located approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta.For more information or to request a guide, call (800) 653-0603 or visit www.visitathensga.com.
