Grand Bahama Vacations adds service to Nassau/Paradise Island By Kimberly Scholz / May 18, 2001 Share 1 -- FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Grand Bahama Vacations expanded its service to offer flights and packages into Nassau/Paradise Island from four U.S. gateways. The service begins June 14 and will be marketed as Driftwood Vacations."We chose to expand into Nassau/Paradise Island because we own two properties there, and it was a natural progression," said Kamal Shah, managing director for Grand Bahama Vacations.Driftwood Hospitality Management, which is the parent company of Grand Bahama Vacations and Driftwood Vacations, owns the Holiday Inn Junkanoo Beach on Nassau and the Holiday Inn SunSpree Paradise Island on Paradise Island."We created the second brand to differentiate between the two destinations (Grand Bahama Island and Nassau/Paradise Island)," Shah said."Grand Bahama is more leisurely paced while Nassau/Paradise Island attracts a different type of customer, especially with Atlantis on Paradise Island," he continued.Driftwood Vacations programs are more family-oriented, according to Shah.As a Bahamas-focused tour operator, Grand Bahama Vacations is known for its Freeport plans. But Shah said it recognized a potential market for Nassau and Paradise Island, especially out of Dallas. Therefore, Dallas is one of four gateways offering the new service. The others are Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Jacksonville, Fla.Driftwood Vacations began taking reservations on April 22 and the Dallas and Tampa markets have been "very receptive."Consumer ads broke on April 28 in the four gateways and Shah is "very optimistic" about the new service.Nassau/Paradise Island will welcome six flights per week with 174 passengers per flight, a number Shah said may be increased.Service from Fort Lauderdale begins June 14 with four flights per week.Jacksonville and Tampa, Fla., begin service June 15 with two flights per week. From Dallas, seasonal, twice-weekly service runs June 14 through Aug. 31.To kick off the Nassau/Paradise Island service, Driftwood Vacations partnered with the Holiday Inns of the Bahamas to offer special rates. Three-, four- and seven-night packages at Holiday Inn SunSpree Paradise Island and Holiday Inn Junkanoo Beach are priced from $319 per person, double. In addition to the Holiday Inns, programs also are offered at Atlantis and the Sheraton Grand Resort on Paradise Island and the British Colonial Hilton on Nassau.
