Hotel Firm Aims to Make Cyprus a Household Word September 27, 1997 Share 1 -- By Felicity LongNEW YORK -- Europeans flock to Cyprus on holiday, but the destination is something of an unknown to Americans, according to Georgia Yagnam, director of marketing for Thanos Hotels. Yagnam hopes the opening of a luxury property in a secluded section of the island will change that.A privately owned and operated company that also owns two hotels in Paphos, Thanos Hotels designed its third property with the upscale American consumer in mind.To be called Anassa, the hotel will feature meetings facilities, a complete spa and sports facility and a beachfront location. " 'Anassa' means 'queen' in ancient Greek, and that is appropriate for our new flagship property," Yagnam said. The official opening is scheduled for March."The Anassa is being built to resemble a large Greek village rather than as a traditional hotel," Yagnam said. The property's 185 rooms will be situated in one main building as well as in villas dispersed over 62 acres. Most villas will have private swimming pools; those that do not will be equipped with Jacuzzis, Yagnam said. She stressed that the property takes advantage of its white sandy beachfront, which contrasts sharply with the rocky coast of most of the island. The property also will feature two multilevel outdoor swimming pools with waterfalls, an indoor pool as well as tennis courts and facilities for water sports. Meeting facilities will include a ballroom that seats 400 and small meeting rooms. Four restaurants will offer a choice of upscale or casual dining, she said. The property will offer group rates year-round. "We also offer complementary escort services for groups or incentives that do not have a local organizer or ground handler," Yagnam said."We will pick people up from the airport, take them on excursions and basically baby-sit them."The property is a 45-minute drive from the Pathos Airport, Yagnam said. Although there are no direct flights from the U.S., clients can reach the island via direct air service from Greece, Israel or Italy, she said. The other two Thanos Hotels properties are the five-star Annabelle and the four-star Paphos Beach Hotel, both located in Paphos. For additional information about Thanos Hotels, call (800) 323-7500.
