Hotel Network Assists Agents With Hard-to-Get Reservations By Henry Magenheim / January 20, 1997 Share 1 -- Reed Travel Features MIAMI BEACH -- South Florida Hotel Network can assist agents with reservations in Florida during special events when space might be tight, according to Bob Guilmartin, vice president.The company, which pays 10% on hotel bookings, has been tapped by event organizers to provide accommodations for attendees.It represents more than 500 properties in Florida.There are four upcoming events in greater Miami in which the hotel firm is involved. They are:* The Original Miami Beach Antique Show. Set for the Miami Beach Convention Center, Jan. 31 to Feb. 5, the show draws upwards of 35,000 attendees.* The Miami International Boat Show. Expected to draw 180,000 visitors, the show will be held in three locations: the Miami Beach Convention Center, the Biscayne Bay Marriott Marina (Miami) and Watson Island, Feb. 12 to 19.A shuttle bus, included in daily or multiday admissions, links all three sites.Runabouts, sport boats, fishing vessels, cruisers, personal watercraft, jet boats, luxury yachts and high-performance boats will be open for boarding and inspection.On Watson Island, sailboats are on view. It also is possible to take a ride in some craft.* The Southern Ocean Racing Conference. This is a five-day regatta operated 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. out of the Miami Beach Marina, Feb. 26 to March 2.According to Bob Meagher, racing conference chairman, some 3,000 attendees are involved.* Carnaval Miami. Run by the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, this event draws more than 1 million visitors who come to experience 10 days of salsa and meringue concerts, parades, beauty and cooking contests, ethnic foods, a golf tournament, dances, beach soccer and a 23-block street party.The celebration is Feb. 28 to March 9.Carnaval sites include Calle Ocho (Southwest Eighth Street), where the street party is held; the Orange Bowl and Bayfront Park, the venues for concerts, all in Miami, and Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, the site of the parade.Funds raised from Carnaval Miami help the Kiwanis Club sponsor humanitarian and civic projects.The South Florida Hotel Network also provides hotel space in West Palm Beach during SunFest, April 30 to May 4, and in the Florida Keys during major event periods.For hotel rate and bookings, agents can call (800) 538-3616.
