Makeover nearly complete at Outrigger Waikiki By Margaret Myre / February 09, 2004 Share 1 -- HONOLULU -- The Outrigger Waikiki is moving into the final phase of an $18 million renovation that began in September 2002. With an updated lobby and renovated guest rooms now part of its landscape, the property is turning its attention to the construction of an oceanview restaurant and a redo of its meetings rooms. The hotel invested $15 million in updating 500 guest rooms, 30 oceanfront suites and all public corridors throughout the 15-floor beachfront property.Fifteen oceanfront rooms were outfitted with oversize, oceanview bathtubs. All rooms now include two phone lines. The 18,000-square-foot upper lobby received a $3 million face-lift and now features an expansive exhibit showcase for museum-quality artifacts. The artifacts join the lobby's familiar accent features, including a wall mural, Polynesian voyaging chart and century-old Kaukahi koa canoe.New levels of service are being introduced with the unveiling of the renovations. Arriving guests are treated to a sit-down check-in, and beginning in March, a full-time Aloha Ambassador will roam the lobby to offer assistance and answer questions. The renovations include replacing carpeting, wall coverings, fabrics and furnishings with dark wood, natural textures and deep tropical colors and patterns throughout the property as well as adding nostalgic Hawaiian images, tropical-themed custom artwork and historical photos of Waikiki."If you like the rooms, you're going to love the lobby," said Dave Lee, vice president, Outrigger property services."A lot of thought was put into bringing the room theme into the lobby, especially the taro-leaf patterns and custom-designed carpet. Particular attention was paid to the lighting to ensure it highlights existing artwork."The hotel is focusing on the refurbishing its three meetings rooms. An additional 800-square-foot meetings room and a 700-square-foot business center are scheduled to be completed by April. The new restaurant, expected to open in July, will constitute the final phase of the renovation project. The hotel also is home to Hawaiian cultural healing workshops and other cultural programming; the landmark restaurant, Duke's Canoe Club; cabaret entertainment by the Society of Seven; and shopping opportunities. For information or reservations, call Outrigger Hotels & Resorts at (800) 688-7444 or log onto www.outrigger.com for Outrigger's Best Value rates, which are bookable by agents as well as consumers. The Best Value Rates offer oceanview rooms at $286 per night, double, and oceanfront rooms for $325.
