KEY WEST, Fla. -- Hurricane Irene bore down on the Florida Keys and
Florida's west coast Friday, prompting a mandatory evacuation of
Keys nonresidents on Thursday. Also evacuated were Sanibel, Captiva
and other barrier islands near Fort Myers.
Preliminary Keys damage reports included flooding of the Duval
Street tourist corridor in Key West and scattered power outages in
the Lower Keys.
Meanwhile airports in Fort Myers and Naples were closed as the
storm approached. US Airways and Delta cancelled flights late
Friday to some southern Florida and west coast airports.
