Rundown of hotel happenings By Laura Dennis / January 15, 2000 Share 1 -- NEW YORK -- Hotels are the hot news on Antigua. Properties are celebrating renovations, reopenings and anniversaries. Jumby Bay reopened Nov. 15 following a refit by its new owners -- the team behind Jamaica's Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club. The resort now offers nightly inclusive rates that range from $475 to $700 per person, double. All rooms have CD players, and all villas have televisions. Most rooms have air conditioning, and the management hopes to have it installed in all rooms by the end of January.Jumby Bay said the rooms have been decorated to be "more homey" with new artwork and fabrics. Brian Webb is the resort's new general manager.The Rex Halcyon Cove reopened Dec. 15, and the Rex Blue Heron is scheduled to open at the end of January. The hotels were closed because of damage from Hurricane Jose, and Hurricane Lenny delayed repair work.St. James's Club closed in September for a refurbishment project. Guest rooms, the villas, public areas, restaurants and bars were upgraded.The villas reopened Dec. 15, and the rest of the resort is scheduled to be back on line Feb. 8. European Plan rates will start at $320 double, valid through March 31.ABI Development Co., an Antiguan-based consortium, and Tradewinds Resorts teamed up to buy Odyssey Antigua (aka Club Antigua) and Jolly Harbour Villas. The Odyssey Antigua will be rebranded the Jolly Beach Hotel.The hotel has been closed for a renovation project and is scheduled to reopen Jan. 22. Tradewinds will manage both properties.Sunsail Beach Club celebrated its one-year anniversary in November and reported an overall occupancy rate of 70% for the year. The Sunsail Beach Club was the former Colonna Beach Resort.Weekly winter rates start at $870 per person, double. The price covers unlimited water sports, the Children's Club, hotel taxes and service charges and airport transfers.The resort also introduced the Half Board Menu, which is a meal plan that includes breakfasts daily, two lunches and four dinners. Guests have the option of dining at the resort or at a local restaurant.The rate for children ages 3 to 12 is $499 when sharing a room with their parents. Children ages 2 and younger stay for free in their parents' room. Rates are valid through April 30, excluding the holiday period.
