St. Thomas-St. Croix ferry service expands By Gay Nagle Myers / June 12, 2003 Share 1 -- CHRISTIANSTED, St. Croix ---Despite a disappointing winter season in terms of traffic, V.I. Fast Ferry now offers year-round service between St. Croix and St. Thomas, according to Kevin Matthews, operations director for Boston Harbor Cruises, the parent company. The ferry service uses the 150-passenger MV American Freedom. It's smaller than the 600-passenger Salacia, which had been used for the winter service, but is now back in Boston."Although our numbers are down, we wanted to go to year-round service because a lot of our customers indicated they wanted it," Matthews said. The 40-mile crossing, offered twice daily, takes approximately an hour and a half.Matthews said the ride between the islands is usually smooth, particularly during the summer when the waters are not very choppy.V.I. Fast Ferry began operations three years ago. Fares are $60 roundtrip for adults; $50 for children from 3 to 12 years old; and free for kids under 3.
