Toncontin Airport in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, reopened on Wednesday, but the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa says U.S. citizens should defer all nonessential travel to Honduras.
The airport closed on Monday after a clash between the military and supporters of ousted president Jose Manuel Zelaya, who was attempting to return to Honduras. The military reportedly blocked airport runways, preventing Zelaya’s plane from landing.
Demonstrations against and in favor of the new regime are expected to continue in the coming days throughout the country, including in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, El Progreso and Roatan, said the U.S. Embassy. Demonstrations have generally been nonviolent, it added.
Some airlines have resumed normal flight schedules, while others remain on an emergency schedule. The embassy advises travelers to contact their airlines directly.
