Editorials Life Is Short, Golf Long July 15, 1998 Share 1 -- Flagler County, which was evacuated during the worst of the Florida wildfires, lost some $4.5 million in tourist revenues over the July 4 period, the Flagler County-Palm Coast Chamber of Commerce reported. The county is just south of St. Augustine and north of Daytona Beach. A principal Flagler County hotel, the 154-room Harborside Inn at Palm Coast, housed firemen at a 50% discount over that memorable weekend. Unfortunately, the firefighters also had to find the strength to make their own beds because many staffers had cleared out, according to Patricia Simpson, general manager. Thanks to the firemen, only one golf pro shop was damaged; the inn and its five golf courses remained unscathed, she said. The 50% discount turned out to be a good business move, too. We hear some of the firefighters plan to return in the fall to play golf.
