Editorials Press Releasing 101 November 26, 1997 Share 1 -- We have seen our share and more of press releases, but one arrived recently with a gimmick we can't remember seeing before. The CVB of a major U.S. city, in announcing the results of its annual fund-raising ball, noted that "invitees included [names all in boldface, of course] Oprah Winfrey, Mi-chael Jordan, Cindy Crawford, Darryl Hannah ." and the list went on. The release continued, "Several celebrities had to decline the Bureau's invitation due to prior commitments," but left it at that, begging the question, well, just which several did attend? No matter. An auction at the event, the release said, included items such as TV scripts, authographed T-shirts and such from other celebrities -- there followed another string of household names, in boldface -- and raised "close to $230,000" for the bureau's promotional efforts. Never mind who shows, as long as you collect the long and the green.
