Report: Man confesses to stabbing of tourist in Antigua

January 31, 2010

Police in Antigua arrested a 24-year-old man from Dominica for the Jan. 19 murder of a San Francisco woman during a cruise stopover to celebrate her sister’s wedding, according to published reports.

Suspect Tishara Daniel confessed to the fatal stabbing of Nina Elizabeth Nilssen, police superintendent Nuffield Burnette told the Antigua Sun.

Daniel was arrested Jan. 29 near the crime scene in English Harbour, Burnette said.

Daniel is scheduled for a court hearing on Monday. He is unemployed, has no prior record and moved to Antigua from Dominica when he was a teenager.

Nilssen had arrived in Antigua with family and friends aboard Star Clippers' Royal Clipper. The family was celebrating the marriage of Nilssen’s 32-year-old sister.

The family disembarked in Antigua for a midday beach barbecue on Pigeon Beach, organized by Star Clippers. Nilssen reportedly was attacked after wandering off alone after the barbecue.

An autopsy found that the San Francisco State University graduate student died from a single stab wound to the neck, according to the coroner’s report in Antigua.

On Jan. 29, Star Clippers said it was dropping Antigua as a port of call on the five remaining Royal Clipper itineraries through April 10. The line is substituting Nevis for the scheduled stop at Antigua.

Star Clippers said it would continue “to monitor the security situation in Antigua and evaluate our options for the next winter season regarding returning to the island.”

Safety is an issue for all travelers. Wandering off alone on a secluded trail is not a wise move in any location. I sell lots of travel and have had some clients mugged, robbed, injured, and killed on various trips abroad and in the US as well. When I asked them or their family what happened, every one told me that they decided to walk, on their own, down a side alley or side street off the main path where no one else dared to venture. In every instance, the result was directly due to their own negligence. If these clients would have not ventured off on their own, they would not have been hurt or killed. This is common sense but many travellers think that because they are on vacation, they can leave their common sense at home. For many, they are lucky, for some, it works against them. In this case, it worked against her and she was killed. Sad but this could have been avoided.

The murder of Nina was not her fault. She has traveled extensively and is aware of her surroundings and her safety. She was accosted and murdered. This was a random act of violence. Second guessing what she should have done and where the blame lies is an exercise in futility. Her family was celebrating a wedding. As their travel agent, I got to know the family and their friends. They were the best of the best. This family is now suffering because of this dreadful act by ONE person. The country of Anitgua, the Cruise Line, the family and Nina did not do anything that caused this to happen. We can remind our guests that when traveling, whether in the USA or abroad, safety, awareness and caution should be observed. We cannot take away the joy of travel because of the actions of one person. The family celebrated Nina's life on Saturday and were informed on Sunday of the arrest.

I think that is so sad. You go somewhere to have fun and end up dead. I feel so sorry for the family of this individual. The cruise ship should avoid this location.

This very tragic situation only captions the fact that where ever we travel, whether it is within the U.S., Europe, Mexico, Caribbean or beyond. We must be aware that there a potentialities for crime everywhere and act accordingly. It is not suggested to wander off alone in any areas that are not familiar. My heart goes out to the family, but I truly hope that tourism as a whole to the Caribbean Islands will not be viewed as dangerous because of their natural beauty and cultures.

I've visited English Harbour in Antigua, and have also lived in New Orleans and San Franciso. It doesn't matter which place you visit, the same problems exist. You simply must be educated as to where to go and where not to go to avoid potential trouble.
