Continental Airlines will end its nonstop service between Kahului on Maui and John Wayne Airport in California’s Orange County on Jan. 2, according to an Orange County Register report.

“The demand in the market is not sufficient to sustain the service for the long-term,” United-Continental spokeswoman Mary Clark said in the Nov. 16 report. “We are contacting customers currently booked on our flights between Orange County and Maui and offering to either re-accommodate them on other flights or provide a refund.”

Continental began service between Maui and Orange County in the spring of 2010 after Aloha Airlines, which offered service from the Southern California airport to Maui, Honolulu, Kauai and the Big Island, filed for bankruptcy in 2008.

According to the Orange County Register report, Continental officials remain committed to the carrier’s current non-stop service between Honolulu and John Wayne Airport.
