Hawaii Golf center co-sponsors Lychee Festival on Big Island By Shane Nelson / June 01, 2009 Share 1 -- Lychees will be abundant during the months of June and July at the Hawaii Island Retreat at Ahu Pohaku Hoomaluhia near the town of Kohala on the Big Island, and on June 7, the retreat and Kamehameha Park Golf Learning Center will co-sponsor the first Lychee Festival. The festival is for golfers and nongolfers alike, and all proceeds will benefit junior golf in North Kohala. Kevin Hayashi, Aloha Section Player of the year, will start things off with a golf clinic followed by a putting and chipping contest and a three-person scramble tournament at the Kamehameha Park Golf Center, featuring a variety of awards and prizes. Following the award ceremony, the golfers will join the rest of the festival goers at the Hawaii Island Retreat, where the day's events will feature live music, a variety of island dishes -- including several lychee recipes -- a silent auction and bar. Other lychee-related events during June and July at the Hawaii Island Retreat will include lychee-picking excursions and sessions on growing organic fruits.
