Hawaii’s largest sporting event, the Honolulu Marathon, will take place Sunday, Dec. 9.
The race, which doesn’t require a qualifying time, featured more than 22,000 participants last year and generated over $107 million in visitor spending, according to a Hawaii Pacific University study.
A longtime favorite among Japanese runners, last year’s Honolulu marathon featured more than 14,000 participants from Japan and 1,350 runners traveling from the U.S. mainland.
The study said the event has generated more than $100 million in visitor spending seven years in a row.
Registration fees for U.S. marathon participants is $175 through Nov. 9 but climbs to $280 through Dec. 8.
