Insight Hawaii Insight Five-year refit complete, Point at Poipu has its grand reopening By Tovin Lapan / June 19, 2017 Share 1 The Point at Poipu, a vacation ownership property managed by Diamond Resorts International, completed a five-year renovation in June. -- The Point at Poipu, a Diamond Resorts International vacation ownership property, held its grand reopening ceremony on June 7, bringing five years of renovations to a close.For area general manager Jamie Shigeta, the best part of the renovations is that they are finally complete. The property did not fully close during the renovations, but the process went building by building and affected normal operations. Diamond Resorts did not disclose the cost of the refit."I'm personally most excited that construction has been completed, and we have the resort fully open," Shigeta said. "Guests can finally get back to enjoying the resort in its entirety, and we as a staff can focus on the guests and sharpening our skills."The resort sits on 22 acres perched on a rocky bluff above Kauai's Shipwreck Beach. Poipu Beach, known for its snorkeling and swimming spots, is a five-minute drive away.There are 219 rooms, including one-, two- and three-bedroom suites. The rooms feature kitchens and dedicated washers and dryers, and the resort's core clientele is families."I've seen families come back year after year," Shigeta said. "I've seen kids grow up and have their own children."Construction concluded June 2, and the reopening was celebrated with a Hawaiian ceremony on June 7."We had the traditional Hawaiian blessing," Shigeta said, "In the whole 5-year renovation we had no incidents or accidents, so we gave thanks for that."New amenities include a fitness center, newly landscaped gardens and atriums and several barbecue grills for guests to use for family cookouts. There is also a zero-entry pool with a sandy, beachlike waterline and an outdoor hot tub."It's changed dramatically since Diamond [assumed ownership in 2007]," said Shigeta, who has been working there for 18 years. "The focus is more on customer service, and we've changed the way we operate. We are more focused on the guests."With the reopening, the resort can now fully implement its guest programming, including hula lessons, lei-making classes and other cultural activities.While many of the improvements were functional, the aesthetics also got a refresh. The buildings received a new coat of paint, and new windows were installed, enhancing the picturesque coastal vistas. In the lobby, there is an eye-catching new chandelier."It's a one-of-a-kind, reverse-painted glass chandelier by California-based artist Jenny Floravita," Shigeta said. "One of the scenes [painted on the chandelier] is of a volcanic ocean reef with honu, sea turtles, incorporated. That was significant to us because we have a group of sea turtles that live in the cove below the resort."According to Shigeta, Diamond Resorts pays commission to agents who book the property."We believe [guests] will be delighted with the careful detail taken during the needed renovations and discover an unforgettable setting for family vacations," Michael Flaskey, CEO for Diamond Resorts International, said in a statement.
