Hawaii Kahala hosts polo tournament By Tovin Lapan / August 11, 2017 Share 1 -- The Kahala Hotel and Resort and the Hawaii International Polo Association will host the Hawaii Invitational of Polo from Sept. 14 to 17. The four-day event is sponsored by Kahala, which will host the welcome and awards banquets, and the polo action will take place at the Waimanalo Polo Fields of the Honolulu Polo Club. The Hawaii International Polo Association was founded in 2013 to celebrate the history of polo in the Islands dating to the 1880s, establish a retirement program for polo horses, work with the state's at-risk youth through horsemanship clinics and promote polo in the Aloha State. The invitational was created to support all of those endeavors. "I am extremely proud of this event, and it clearly plants our flag on the international stage of polo, just as the Sony Open has done for golf and the Triple Crown has done for surfing," Chris Dawson, founder and CEO of the Hawaii Invitational of Polo, said in a statement. "The Hawaii Invitational of Polo will honor Hawaii's paniolo culture and preserve a polo legacy for generations to come."Dawson is a native Hawaiian and polo player who sat on the Board of the United States Polo Association for more than 10 years. "The Kahala has a unique history in Hawaii polo through the resort's developmen partner, Charlie Pietsch, a local polo player who built his dream ranch on Oahu's North Shore, Sunset Ranch," Dawson said. "This exciting partnership celebrates our mutual rich histories and contributions to community life in Hawaii, and we look forward to working closely together for many years to come." The Kahala Hotel and Resort will host the visiting professional polo players, and is also offering travel packages for the event. Tickets for the launch party cost $150, entry to the polo invitational starts at $50 and the awards brunch costs $100.
