Lodgings in Amsterdam range from deluxe modern hotels to classic canal-house hotels to cheap youth hostels. Advance reservations are advisable, particularly for spring and summer months, as there is a general shortage of hotel rooms.
The more expensive the hotel, the less likely it is that breakfast is included in the room rate.
When booking in advance, always inquire whether the hotel has an elevator (called a "lift"), as Dutch staircases are extraordinarily narrow and steep, and many canal-house hotels aren't permitted to install them. If staying in the center of the city, rooms to the rear of the hotel tend to be quieter.
