Johannesburg has a wealth of accommodations ranging from top-end international hotel chains and local chain hotels, mostly aimed at the many business travelers who visit the city, to individual luxury boutique-hotels and good-value guesthouses where you are likely to interact with the hosts.
Most hotels feature a business center, Wi-Fi, restaurants, bars, swimming pools and secure parking.
At the top end are a clutch of five-star hotels with special ambience and superb service, most of which are located in the leafy northern suburbs. They also offer fine dining and other facilities open to nonguests.
There are a number of guesthouses in the northern suburbs that will appeal to people who don't want the anonymity of a large hotel. In most, guests interact with hosts and other guests around the breakfast or dinner table, though some have units in the garden with separate entrances and parking.
At the budget end, there are a couple of good backpackers' hostels in Johannesburg offering dorms and doubles, with or without baths. Township bed-and-breakfasts are becoming a popular way to stay with friendly hosts in Soweto.
