As destinations seek to expand their reach to niche markets in an effort to capture untapped clients and revenues, the tourism scene is inundated with culinary classes, volunteer humanitarian journeys, body boot camps, wine seminars and festivals and even detox camps where visitors leave technology behind for a week.
Los Cabos has followed suit, promoting one of its natural assets in the destination’s first surf and music fest June 17 to 23.
The Los Cabos Open of Surf festival will take place along the Costa Azul’s Zippers Beach Break, known for producing 8- to 10-foot waves in summer.
The competition is a qualifying event for some of the world’s best professional surfers competing for a chance to win a $155,000 cash prize.
The beach site also will feature beach bars, a food court, art walks, fashion shows and concerts.
“The government of Baja California Sur, the Los Cabos Tourism Board and the city of Los Cabos are proud to support this event with the intention of driving the ever-growing adventure tourism niche to our beaches,” said Ruben Reachi Lugo, secretary of tourism of Baja California Sur.
“It is our long-term goal to make this an annual event that becomes an obligated stop for the best surfers of the world and for the spectators that love this sport,” he said.
Several hotels in Cabo offer surf festival packages, including the Holiday Inn Resort Los Cabos with all-inclusive rates from $170 per room, per night, double.
