A whale sharkThe fifth annual Whale Shark Festival is set for June 21 to 24 in Isla Mujeres near Cancun.

The event is designed to raise awareness of the area’s marine ecosystem, according to John Vater, co-founder of Ceviche Tours, a sponsor of the festival along with the Isla Mujeres Department of Tourism.

Isla Mujeres is part of the second-largest barrier reef in the world (Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the largest) and serves as a migratory path of whale sharks, sea turtles, waterfowl and game fishes.

Family events at the festival include swimming with whale sharks, seminars and films on marine biology, dance and music performances and local excursions in Isla Mujeres.
