Mexico Dispatch, Cancun: Learning paddleboarding By Gay Nagle Myers / March 04, 2014 Share 1 -- As reports of another blast of polar weather circulated through news channels, Mexico editor Gay Nagle Myers and her winter-weary daughter Jenn, a Pittsburgh resident who has not seen sun since November, escaped to the Nizuc Resort & Spa near Cancun. Click to read her first dispatch.PUNTA NIZUC — We bailed on one excursion Sunday morning, learned a new sport that afternoon, and I am now dealing with travel advisories/canceled flights on a personal basis for the first time this unending winter.We’d booked an excursion with Aqua World in Cancun for a trip to the Underwater Museum to snorkel above the 400 sculptures by English artist Jason deCaires Taylor.“The water is rough, the current is strong, the winds are high, the boat ride will be bumpy,” Jose, Aqua World guide, told us.“Muchas gracias,” I said. Call us wimps, but we quickly retreated to the sanctuary of Nizuc Resort, where the Caribbean Sea was calm and the wind a mere breeze.Miguel gave us a quick instruction on the art of paddleboarding and we climbed aboard what looked like surfboards to me.Jenn got the hang of it immediately. She was upright and cruising while I was still in the kneeling position. I stood, I fell, I got back on and tried again.Eventually I too got it. We paddled past stands of mangroves and into the entrance of a small canal.Ricardo, one of the beach waiters, sprinted down the beach, calling my name.“No, no, you will sink.”We backpaddled to the safety of the shore. Ricardo told us there was quicksand in the canal.Jenn said she heard him also mention the word “crocodile.” I didn’t hear that. I was back on the beach, placing an order for two pineapple daiquiris.Later, at dinner in the Punta Grill on the adults-only end of the property, we kept to the sea theme of the day. Jesus, the manager, recommended the catch of the day.“Today it is hogfish. We serve the whole fish.”Jenn was game.
