Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit is ramping up its resort scene with new developments, properties and promotions of cultural attractions and sports activities.
Year to date, investments totaling more than $70 million have been committed to develop hotels along the Riviera Nayarit’s coast, according to Richard Zarkin, communications manager for the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The new developments this year include the debut of the Iberostar brand in December and the 172-unit Tau Resorts Nahui, a timeshare project opening later this year that will include a village, beach club, golf course, hiking trails and oceanfront watersports center.
The Grand Luxxe Nuevo Vallarta, a Grupo Vidanta resort that opened in 2010, will open a new, 144-room tower in November, bringing the resort’s total room count to 540.
Zarkin said the new developments cap a year when several hotels opened or renovated, including the new Hard Rock Vallarta resort, which debuted last August.
Major upgrades took place at the Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa, Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta and Four Seasons Punta Mita.
In addition to resorts, Nayarit is developing three inland destinations that focus on the region’s indigenous Indian cultures, colonial structures and watersports and fishing activities.
