Construction has begun on a golf course designed by Tiger Woods on Mexico’s Baja peninsula.

Ground has been broken on the $12 million El Cardonal course at Diamonte Cabo San Lucas, a 1,500-acre oceanfront resort community.

Woods’ 18-hole course will augment another 18-hole course that opened in 2009 at Diamonte.

The 7,300-yard course is expected to open in 2014 and will be suitable for average golfers, according to Woods.

He previously designed courses for projects in Dubai and North Carolina, which are under development after being affected by the recession.

Wood’s first Mexican golf course, called Punta Brava south of San Diego, was slated to open in 2011 but has been delayed until 2013 at least.
