USA Museum among Mammoth Mountain upgrades By Felicity Long / July 10, 2014 Share 1 -- California’s Mammoth Mountain unveiled its newest attraction, the Explore Mammoth museum, July 4. The museum is part of an interactive adventure experience that also features guided hikes and a movie theater, all designed to showcase the region’s geological, natural and human history. Other recent upgrades at Mammoth include Campo Mammoth, a restaurant opened by James Beard semifinalist Mark Estee. Located in Mammoth village adjacent to the Westin Mammoth and the Village Lodge, the restaurant features Italian cuisine, including a wood-fire pizza oven and a kids menu, as well as a sandbox and bocce court on the patio. Also new are two restaurants at Mammoth Rock N' Bowl, which opened in March with 12 lanes, three golf simulators and a wide selection of games. The restaurants, the Brasserie and Bar, will operate under the supervision of Mammoth chef Frederic Pierrel. Summer activities at Mammoth include the MTB Discovery Zone, a lift area dedicated specifically to beginner mountain bikers. The Zone, which includes a Skills Park with instructional signs and videos, was designed to help newbie bikers improve their skills before tackling lift-accessed mountain biking. The Mammoth Adventure Center, located at Main Lodge, offers family activities, including a climbing wall, zipline and bungee trampoline. Finally, visitors can explore Devils Postpile, towering rock formations created by lava eruptions as early at 100,000 years ago. Families can hike to the Postpile or venture a few miles away to Rainbow Falls for a picnic and views of the 100-foot falls.
