River Cruise Emerald Waterways vessel damaged in shipyard fire By Jerry Limone / February 01, 2016 Share 1 -- The Emerald Belle river ship sustained "significant damage" in a shipyard fire shortly after midnight on Sunday, which will delay the scheduled launch of the vessel in April. The Emerald Waterways ship was under construction at the Den Breejen Shipyard in the Netherlands."Despite the efforts of firefighters, who were quickly at the scene, the damage is significant," said Glen Moroney, chairman of the Scenic Group, parent of the Emerald Waterways line. "We are grateful and relieved that nobody was onboard at the time and, most importantly, there were no injuries to any shipyard worker or firefighters." A Scenic ship, the Amber, was under construction nearby, but it was quickly moved away from the fire, Scenic Group said. Damage to the Amber was contained to some exterior paint, and the ship is on schedule to enter service in April.Scenic Group said the firefighting system on the Emerald Belle was not yet operational, although the ship's construction was well along. Firefighting authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze.Meanwhile, Emerald Waterways is reviewing Belle bookings and determining how to best reaccommodate guests. The cruise line said it would offer departures on other Emerald or Scenic ships.Agents with bookings will be notified in the next few days to discuss options, Emerald Waterways said.A web page, www.emeraldwaterways.com/emerald-belle, will provide updates on affected sailings.
