InsightIt can be hard to notice the changes and upgrades from one new European river cruise vessel to the next: The modifications are so slight, so understated, the tweaks so subtle. But indeed, over time, a sleek new class of river cruise ship has emerged in Europe, right under our noses.

While the interiors have certainly been getting more modern and airy, with a greater emphasis on windows and light both in the common areas and in the cabins, the exteriors too reflect a much more streamlined design.

Perhaps because the modifications were so gradual, it has been at times difficult to spot them during European river cruising’s rebirth over the past several years.

But if you take a look at the newest ships coming onto the market in Europe — the Viking Longships, the Avalon Suite Ships, Ama Waterways’ newest vessels, the Scenic Space Ships, the Uniworld Super Ships — they all reflect a contemporary aesthetic decidedly removed from their predecessors.

They have evolved from rectangular shoebox barges into more aerodynamic vessels with almost a yacht-like appearance.

Most of the newest ships now have floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap around the main lounge and bar area, transforming them into nearly 360-degree viewing decks. Many have also added indoor and/or outdoor seating areas both at the bow and stern of the ships.

They often now incorporate skylights and ornate chandeliers into the entrance lobbies, to flood them with light both day and night.

Take a close look at some of the new ships of 2012 and 2013, and it becomes clear just how much, little by little, river cruise ships have really changed.
