River Cruise Tauck creates Ken Burns Mississippi River itinerary By Michelle Baran / November 01, 2012 Share 1 -- Tauck has teamed up with Ken Burns to create an 11-day Mississippi River itinerary that includes a seven-night cruise aboard the recently relaunched American Queen.The new Life on the Mississippi itinerary will launch early next year as part of the company’s Ken Burns American Journeys collection.Tauck will offer both northbound and southbound versions of the itinerary between Memphis and New Orleans, with the seven-night cruise on the 436-passenger paddlewheeler American Queen bookended by an overnight stay at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis and two nights at the Roosevelt in New Orleans. There will be exclusive Tauck sightseeing and shore excursions during the city stays and throughout the cruise. In Memphis, Tauck passengers will hear a private lecture on the city’s history and culture from a local historian, and in Helena, Ark., they will be attend a private performance by the Greater First Baptist Church Choir, for example.Aboard the American Queen, Tauck passengers will have access to special lectures, a private bloody mary cocktail party and a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship.Ken Burns and his longtime collaborator Dayton Duncan were instrumental in crafting the new itinerary, according to Tauck CEO Dan Mahar. The Mississippi River’s influence has been explored in Burn’s documentaries, including "Jazz," "The Civil War," "Mark Twain," "Huey Long" and "The National Parks: America’s Best Idea." Tauck’s Life on the Mississippi is priced from $4,790 per person, based on double occupancy, plus air, with guaranteed accommodations in six different cabin categories. Tauck will operate 15 departures between February and June and in November and December with up to 44 passengers per departure.
