The government of Belize has launched an investigation into the near-destruction of Noh Mul (Big Hill), a large Mayan archaeological site, on May 10 by a construction company.

In a statement issued May 14, the Belize Ministry of Tourism and Culture called the wrecking of a pyramid that dates back 2,300 years "callous, ignorant and unforgivable."

The ruins, among the largest in Belize, included twin clusters 100 feet tall surrounded by 10 plazas.

The site covered 12 square miles in the middle of a privately owned sugarcane field in northern Belize.

Police are reportedly conducting an investigation.
