A strong 7.5 magnitude earthquake off the Pacific coast of Guatemala on Wednesday shook buildings in Guatemala City and caused evacuations as far away as Mexico City, some 750 miles away.
The quake struck 100 miles west of the capital near the small town of Champerico, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was the strongest earthquake to hit Guatemala since a 1976 quake that claimed more than 20,000 lives.
Landslides blocked roads in some areas and about 40 houses were severely damaged. At least eight people were killed.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a very small tsunami was registered on Guatemala's coast, adding there was a risk of localized damage within a 62-mile radius.
