Flight delays began stacking up Tuesday morning on the second weekday of furloughs of air traffic controllers as part of budget sequestration, although the Federal Aviation Administration cautioned that it was too soon to tell whether the delays were caused by budget cuts.
However, the FAA also said, "Yesterday, more than 1,200 delays in the system were attributable to staffing reductions resulting from the furlough. There were more than 1,400 additional delays as a result of weather and other factors."
Delays of two hours at New York LaGuardia, 90 minutes at Newark and an hour at New York Kennedy were reported by 10 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the Flightaware.com flight-tracking service.
More than 50 cancellations and 124 delays were reported, most of them affecting airports in New York, Miami, Orlando, Denver, Charlotte and Chicago Midway.
On Monday, there were 400 flights canceled and 6,997 delays reported.
As they did on Monday, more problems were expected to crop up Tuesday as schedules peaked later in the day.
The FAA said in a statement that travelers could expect to see "a wide range of delays that will change throughout the day depending on staffing and weather-related issues."
