American Airlines confirmed that it will no longer operate its daily service between New York Kennedy and Barbados, effective Jan. 15.
The carrier will continue to operate its two daily roundtrips between Miami and Barbados.
In the wake of the announcement, Sue Springer, executive vice president of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, assured hoteliers that the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) and the Ministry of Tourism were in talks with other carriers to pick up the slack.
Urban Cumberbatch, BTA's acting president and CEO, said, "We are not taking this lightly. We understand the impact of a service terminating from the New York area. This move is detrimental from an airline capacity standpoint and impactful on the diaspora as well," according to the Barbados Advocate, the island's local paper.
